Tasting Notes by Jim McEwan
Aromas - It opens with a remarkable alliance that is only discovered when put in single cask. This whiskey is wonderful and unique, a real rarity considering that most bottlings contain many casks married together. The Sherry & smoke character from 16 years of maturation on the island of Islay Drams is incredible. I have rarely experienced a whiskey like this. And what pride to discover one of my "children" after 16 years of waiting!
The aromas and flavor are nuances of plump red grapes, nutty oak, peat roasted barley. Then, when it opens, it's Pandora's box of this artisanal whiskey from a distillery that's been abandoned for over a decade.
The tangy, mellow sweetness of the oak from the Spanish cask contrasts completely with the peaty openness of the Hebrides and it pairs deliciously well. It is wonderfully unctuous and seems to glide over the palate. Beneath the harmonious fruity flavors are dark chocolate, raisins, prunes, hints of nuts and nutmeg.
Matured on the edge of the Atlantic, the DNA of Islay floats proudly in this beautiful craft whisky.
